Nilgiris: Over the years, while both the Central and State governments boast about Crores of rupees it has spent for tribal development, nothing much has changed in the lives of Tribals living near Gudalur here. Their living conditions are so poor that they still lack a proper don’t even have a proper roof that protects them during rains.

Tribal communities here, especially Tribes belonging to Toda, Kurumba, Kattunaikker, Irular, Paniyar, and Kothar communities are included in Scheduled Tribes list. Though Crores of rupees have been allotted for the welfare of Tribals through Tribals Welfare Department every five years, its benefits haven’t reached this community yet.

Allocation of Funds for Tribes during past financial years:
2014 - 2015 - Rs.8.40 Crores
2015 - 2016 - Rs.9 Crores
2016 - 2017 - Rs.7.30 Crores
2017 - 2018 - Rs.17.54 Crores
Total - Rs.42.24 Crores
Besides this, Crores of rupees are also allocated under Special funds for Maoists. However, a reality check would prove that none of these funds have reached these Tribals. A visit to Gudalur, Bandhalur Tribal villages will prove that. The Panniyar and Kattuaniker Tribes here are still living in age-old huts with no basic amenities.

Recently, more than 14 Tribal families living in Cherampaadi near Bandalur here lost their huts in the continuous rains and they had to leave the village and take shelter in the forests and nearby places. Later, officials visited these tribal families and arranged permanent settlements for seven families amongst them.

Later, Cherangodu Panchayat fixed solar street lamps in the area. However, they fused in few days. Since Elephants stray into their village often, Tribes here forced to stay indoors after 6 pm. One of the Tribals here said, “Though we have complained to many local body officials, no action has been taken till date. We request the District administration to take necessary action immediately.”
